Do you find a prejudice against people who attend law school later in life?
Being a lawyer isn't just about learning the law and problem solving. It is about understanding clients' goals, both personally and in a business. From there, attorneys can create plans for addressing those goals but always keeping in mind the customers' prices and overall company and/or plans that are individual. In a nutshell, understanding and implementing the law, while unbelievably important to any lawyer's success, is only one component of what an attorney does. And, candidly, lawyers who have experience in prior real-life experience the workforce, or adulthood in terms of life lessons are more equipped to immediately grasp the larger picture of what it's to be a lawyer.
Did any classes prove especially useful as you began practicing?
In my own experience now as a hiring attorney, the biggest failing I have observed with pupils and new attorneys whom I have interviewed or hired is the inability to examine both sides of a problem and summarize the findings in a coherent memo or even persuasive brief. Mastery of analysis and writing skills in law school are critical--both because these tools make you an immediate asset to a law company and also since they are virtually impossible improve in practice and to spend time on.
Would you must drive yourself to the ground the first few years of training to create it?
Moreover, since you'll normally be working with a team of other attorneys, you will not want to let your team down. We attorneys are professionally and ethically bound to zealously represent our clients' interests. When you tackle the representation of any matter big or small, the pertinent concerns really don't revolve completely around your schedule--your clients' interests (along with also the reputation of your firm) will be a priority.
what's the best way to get a job?
To find balance between life and career, it's necessary to have a big-picture perspective. Life will never seem balanced if you are taking snapshots hourly, daily, or weekly since it is hard to focus on work and family simultaneously. Whilst reading a story A attorney can't write a motion while volunteering in a classroom and cannot take a deposit. If you take certain measures but it is possible to be an excellent lawyer and a superb parent in precisely the same time.
Was there anything you wished you'd have done differently in law school that you didn't realize before you started to practice?
I wish I'd worked in a law firm, even for a session. It is quite difficult to go from a full-time job into a law enforcement job that is low-paying. However, I wish I had. Since I started my own practice quite shortly it would have been nice to have some expertise. Even things as simple as how to assign work, and how to establish a client file, the ideal approach to charge could have been nice to learn beforehand rather than on the fly.
What do you like most about your project? Least?
I deal on a daily basis with government agencies that aren't always administering the law and often have examiners who are under-trained. It can be frustrating dealing with a system that is so unpredictable.
